INTRODUCTION
Now that the Amsterdam Branch of the Netherland-England SocietY has existed for more than five Years, the Committee believe that manY members would like to receive a surveY of this pertod of its life, to remind them of many pleasant and instructive lectures. Perhaps this will also interest other people in Amsterdam who have not Yet joined the SocietY, but might lihe to hnow about its activities. PinallY we hope that our English friends and lecturers, who have taken the trouble to cross the North Sea, to give us of their best will liketo receive this report. Some of them have obliged us anew bY sending a portrait and a short message for publication. Both, we think, give this booklet a lasting value. The Committee flatter themselves that the Branch has indeed helped to promote good feeling between the two countries and has, in a modest, though not unsatïsfactory way, contributed to the establishment of understanding among natipns.

A SURVEY OF THE FIRST FIVE YEARS OF THE
NETHERLAND-ENGLAND SOCIETY
AMSTERDAM
Founded on November 3rd. 1920, the Amsterdam Branch of the Netherland-England Society commenced its activities on the 12th of November 1920 with a lecture by Dr. A. Yusuf AH ón British India.
According to the Articles of Association the aim of the NetherlandEngland Society is "the improvement of friendly relations between Holland and the British Empire, especially in political,economical, intellectual and artistic respects." This would seem to imply a multitude of activities. Practice has shown that the Society has on the whole left political relations to the diplomatic service, and the economical ties to the consular officials and the existing Chambers of Commerce, but that it has done a very intensive and, we hope, useful work in promoting the intellectual and the artistic relations between the two countries, that, separated by the North Sea, have yet so much in common.
First among the things we have done ranh the lectures, which, in Amsterdam, have become a regular institution, attended by many hundreds of people.
As will be seen from the Schedule, we have been very fortunate in the choice of our lecturers. We owe a great debt of gratitude to many eminent Englishmen, who at our invitation, have taken the trouble to cross the sea and come here. It is the constant endeavour of our Society to make these visits as useful for both sides as possible. In particular we always try to bring lecturers into contact with people they may be ïnterested to meet. In this way we hope to create bonds

that may subsist long after our guests have gone back to their country. In other ways too we want to give our guests a good impression of Holland and its people, and we are very grateful to the numerous members who so generously assist us. The lectures themselves have generaüy been very successful. None of them, we believe, have had an audience of less than one hundred, and in some cases (Lord Cecil, Capt G. I. Finch, Mr. Arthur Weigall) nearly two thousand people were present. Many lecturers are struck by the perfect comprehension of their subject by the audience from the moment they start speahing. It is not always easy to persuade very prominent people to come and lecture in Holland. From time to time members of our Society have a brilliant idea and wrïte to us: "why not ask Mr. Bernard Shaw and Mr. Lloyd George." They do not know that these famous men and many others have been approached not once but many times, in all sorts of tunes and through all available channels! But some great men seem to have many calls upon their time, that a lecturing tour is out of question.
Several of the lecturers were not invited by the Amsterdam branch directly, but through the Secretary of the General Committee and founder of the Netherland-England Society, Mr. H. Dunlop of The Hague, who gives himself an infinite amount of trouble to satisf y his branches. We may not omit to mention here Mr. I. I. Brants, the London correspondent of the Amsterdam newspaper "Algemeen Handelsblad", who acts as Mr. Dunlop's London representative, and who, some time ago, was made an honorary member of the Society in acknowledgement of his many and dlstinguished services. Some of the lectures were organised by the Secretariat of the "English Association in Holland", a sister organisation with which we often cooperate.
If we may single out four of the most successful lectures, we should think of the following:

gave his lecture before a full house, counting many admirers who had seen hïm act in Amsterdam more than twenty years ago. Mr. Gabworthy's lecture gave us more than a hundred new members and placed the Society on a firm basis. Captain Finch's account of the second Mount Everest expedition, illustrated by beautiful slides, drew an audience of more than two thousand and enabled us to remit a sum of fl. 3029.20 to the Mount Everest Committee as net proceeds of the lectures organised by us in Amsterdam and in several other places. An equally numerous audience heard the Rt. Hon. Viscount Cecil of Chelwood speabing on the League of Nations when Dr. B. C J. Loder, First President of the Permanent Court of International Justice was in the chair. But there have been many other lectures which in one way or another were equally memorable.
Many endeavours have been made in the course of this quinquennium to induce English theatrical companies to give performances in Holland. This has proved far from easy, and was realised only once, in March 1923, when "The Every Man Theatre" made a tour through Holland, upon the initiative of our branch. The plays produced were "The Pigeon" by Galsworthy and "At Mrs. Beam's" by C. K. Munro. The experiment was not unsuccessful from an artistic point of view, but the financial results were deplorable. Circumstances being what they are we may safely say that theatrical tours of English companies in Holland are very uncertain of covering their expenses. This bnowledge was obtained at rather heavy expense and we hesitate to repeat the experiment1). In the field of sports there exist already many relations between Holland and England so that as a rule the intervention of the Society can be dispensed with. An exception to this rule was

made when in 1923 we offered a challenge-cup for lawn-tennis matches between Amsterdam and Cambridge teams. This cup gave occasion to a series of interesting and instructive matches, in which the English were victorious. It was necessary therefore to provide a second cup in 1925, the first one having been won definitely by Cambridge. We hope that in the near future our home team may have better lucb.
Two exfiibitions were organïsed which proved great successes. In the spring of 1921 a representative collection of modern Scottish pictures was shown at the Stedelijh Museum, while in March 1923 an exhibition of British Industrial Art was held in the same place. Sincere thanhs are due to the special committees who arranged these exhibitions, in the first place to the hon. secretaries Dr. E. van der Minne and Miss D. Kohnstamm, and also to the donors whose generous gifts enabled us to defray the very considerable expenses involved.
We must not close this survey without thanhing the Amsterdam Press for the constant support we have received from their side. As to the future, we may looh forward with confidence. Until recently we were greatly hampered by the fact that no really good hall was available for the lectures, the existing halls being either too small for the increasing number of our members or too uncomfortable. Now the fine Auditorium of the "Koloniaal Instituut" has been completed, we can avail ourselves of this beautiful hall, in which over 700 people can hear every word of a lecture in great comfort. It is a great satisfaction to hnow that we can now accommodate a very considerable number of new members, while these last years we had obtained a practical maximum. The possibility of further expansion is one of the reasons for the publication of this boohlet. We can now open our doors widely to new members, and we hope many will join. The greater the number of our supporters, the more we can offer to every one of them and the better we are able to carry out our tasb. K. I.

MESSAGES FROM LECTURERS TO THE MEMBERS OF THE NETHERLAND-ENGLAND SOCIETY IN AMSTERDAM
My first experience of Dutch hospitalitY was in the late Spring of 1921, when, in the course of a journeY round the world, I visited the beautiful island of lava, and so kind was my welcome there that I always afterwards looked forward to visiting Holland. When the Genootschap Nederland-Engeland sent me its kind invitation to lecture I was therefore particularly happy to accept it. I find it difficult adequately to express how much I enjoyed my visit to Leiden, Amsterdam and The Hague and my appreciation of the beauty of these towns and of the kindness with which I was received. I have travelled in many parts of the world, both East & West, but nowhere else, except perhaps in China, have I been conscious of a civilisation which was so simpatico to me. The Genootschap Nederland-Engeland is doing a really important work in the great cause of international good feeling, for it is in such opportunities for the reception of personal impressions and the formation of personal ties that the true basis of internationalism ties. May warm friendship always unite our two countries and may the Genootschap Nederland-Engeland long flourish to carry on its valuable mission.

It is a great pleasure to hear that the Genootschap NederlandEngeland continues to flourish. Long may- it do so!
The worh which such societies do in promoting international understanding through meetings of individuals is of the highest value. My wife and I learnt much by our visit to you. In addition to the pleasant intercourse with so many friends — some of whom we have since had the pleasure of welcoming in Oxford —, we gathered much of the Dutch outlook and the Dutch point of view, which had enriched our experience and enabled us to understand the points of contact and sympathy between your nation and ours. This I hope we have been successful in interpreting to our own countrymen. Rotterdam, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Leiden: these names call up to us a succession of delightful visits, and innumerable kindnesses, crowned with honours which we value highly. And by seeing so many renowned places we learnt much of Dutch history.

MaY I saY that I often think of mY visit to Holland, when I lectured in Amsterdam and other towns, and it is always a delightful memorY to revive ? How good you all were to me 1 And what a difference it makes to one's thoughts of a foreign country, when one feels that one has friends there. I vividly remember my first glimpse of Holland, I was returning to London from Dresden long ago in the depth of a hard winter, and my train crossed the frontier about sunrise. The country was all snow, over which the sun rose red; people were skating on the canals; everyone seemed healthy and cheerfuL It was the Holland of the pictures I knew so well: and I was enchanted. Since then I have paid many brief visits to your country; but the time when I came to lecture for your society and the English Association was different from all the others. It was a privilege to have just a glimpse of Holland from within: and to have the opportunity of appreciating the wide culture, as

When Charles II heard that Gregorio Leti was writing a history of his Court, he warned him to be careful not to give offence. "I will do my utmost to obey your Majesty, but were I as wise as Solomon I must offend someone," he replied. "Then imitate Solomon," advised the King. "Leave history alone and compose proverbs."
But Leti could not forbear writing his projected booh.
As soon as this worh appeared, the author was banished from
England!
It is with great pleasure that I comply with your Secretary's wishes to write a message to the Amsterdam Branch of the Netherland-England Society.
It is always a great pleasure to me to write or say anything dealing with the Netherlands, or its people. I have already tried to convey this in my earlier works on the Stadtholder William III and William the Silent. At present I am engaged upon a booh (not in novel form) dealing with the history and people of the Netherlands, which I hope will further endorse my love and interest for the country and its people. I can only ask the citizens of Amsterdam to be tolerant with me when they read the work, especially any of it referring to their City. This book will convey to the nation my deep feelings and admiration which have always been with me from my childhood up.
I can only wish that the bond of good feeling and friendship between our two countries will be greatly strengthened through the efforts of the Society.

I gladly take this opportunity of congratulating the NetherlandEngland Society; on the completion of the first five years of its existence.

The extent to which an Englishman "feels at home" when he visits the Netherlands, emphasises the degree to which the Dutch and the English are akin: while the extraordinary kindness and the unique courtesy which he experiences in your country mahe him almost ashamed — for he realises quite well that he never treats fiïs guests so handsomelyl Great things have gradual beginnings, and world-peace and reasonable international arrangements will result, not from neglecting the facts of nationality, not from treaties and diplomatic activity, but chiefly from the goodwill and mutual esteem which is produced by personal contact of the individuals of one country with those of another. This in respect of our two nations, is the object which your Society has in mind: and I know, from experience, that it fulfils its objects very well.

Most Englishmen have a very friendly feeling towards the Dutch, the natural result of the fact that between the two peoples there are such close affinities. A quarrel between them could arise only from some deplorable misunderstanding, and I am deeply convinced of the value of the worh of the Genootschap Nederland-Engeland in helping to prevent the occurrence of any such disaster. For this reason, I wish every prosperity to the Amsterdam branch of the Society, on the occasion of the complefJon of the fifth year of its existence, the more so because I have such pleasant memories of the cordial welcome which it extended to me in March, 1925.

I came to Amsterdam the week after my daughter's marriage. It is a mournful matter when your only daughter transfers her charming youth to another home and I needed change of scène and new friends. I found these in Holland.

It is the most welcoming and at the same time restful country. It gives you kindness and it offers peace. Its ways are simpler than those of industrial England and you come back from it invigorated as if you had not gone on that nerve-racking work — lecturing — but for a holiday with old friends. While in Amsterdam I bought a coffee-pot so as to make for myself coffee after the delicious fashion of the Hollanders. But that is a year ago and, alas, China — breaks. I can't do without my "special" coffee. Will somebody please give me the address of a "coffee-pot" shop in Amsterdam?

I believe that countries like Holland, though small in territorial extent, may be very great in moral influence and may act the more successfully as conciliators in misunderstandings between nations because their motives are not open to suspicion. Societies like yours do really valuable work by creating and maintaining centres of interpretation and by encouraging the habit of seeking to understand the points of view of foreign countries — a habit of which the extension would safeguard peace against the dangers that may arise from outbursts of uncomprehending national passions.

I often think of the lucky chances of this world and reflect that none was more lucky for me than the chance I had of first coming to lecture in Holland. I had been asked to recommend some one to lecture on English Polk songs and unblushinghj I recommend myself. To that brazen-faced act I owe much: four visits to your delightful country (which I feel I know now better than many Dutchmen, so varied have been my travels) and, what is more than that, some friendships which I hope will last long after I am too old to lecture any more. In the process of teaching it is ultimately the teacher who learns. My mission in Holland was to show some specimen of English culture. In return you taught me to love your country, to admire your ways, and to count your countrymen my friends. May I wish your Society five hundred and more years of this fruitful activity.

Art 1
Het Genootschap „Nederland-Engeland" is gevestigd te 's-Gravenhage. Het is aangegaan voor den tijd van 29 {aren, te rekenen vanaf den dag der oprichting, zijnde 24 April 1920.
Het eerste boekjaar loopt van den dag der oprichting tot en met 31 December 1920. De verdere boekjaren zijn gelijk aan de kalenderjaren.
Art. 2
Het Genootschap heeft ten doel, de vriendschapsbetrekkingen tusschen Nederland en het Britsche Rijk te bevorderen en wel in hoofdzaak door daaromtrent in Nederland kennis te verspreiden, vooral op staatkundig, economisch, intellectueel en artistiek gebied. Het tracht dit doel te bereiken langs wettigen weg en wel door het doen houden van voordrachten en tentoonstellingen, het doen Uitwisselen van onderwijskrachten, en voorts door andere wettige middelen die aan het doel van het Genootschap bevorderlijk kunnen zijn.
Art 3
Het Genootschap zal daarbij, in hoofdzaak, gebruik maken van Britsche krachten, en zooveel mogelijk samenwerken met in het Britsche Rijk gevestigde of op te richten genootschappen die hetzelfde doel beoogen.
Art. 4
Het -Genootschap zal eveneens zooveel mogelijk samenwerken met de in Nederland gevestigde vereeniging „Nederland in den Vreemde".
Art. 5
Het Genootschap bestaat uit eereleden, leden-begunstigers, leden-donateurs en gewone leden, in Nederland gevestigd, die allen stemgerechtigd zijn. Gewone leden betalen een jaarlijksche bedrage van minstens f 5.—; ledenbegunstigers een jaarlijksche bijdrage van minstens f 50.—; leden-donateurs zijn degenen die een som van minstens f 500.— ineens aan het genootschap schenken. Over het toetreden der leden en over uitzonderingsgevallen beslist het Bestuur. Aan personen, die zich jegens het Genootschap of deszelfs doel bijzonder verdienstelijk hebben gemaakt, kan, op voordracht van het Bestuur, het eerelidmaatschap van het Genootschap worden aangeboden.
De benoeming van eereleden geschiedt bij acclamatie door de Algemeene Vergadering, tenzij ten minste 3 leden stemming verlangen. Eereleden zijn van contributie vrijgesteld.
Het lidmaatschap der vereeniging eindigt door opzegging door het lid of door het Bestuur van het Genootschap tegen 30 November van een kalenderjaar, mits de opzegging uiterlijk 30 September van dat jaar zij gedaan.

Art. 6
Het lidmaatschap loopt van 1 Januari tot 31 December, en wordt geacht, ieder jaar den len Januari opnieuw In te gaan, tenzij het vóór den len December schriftelijk aan den Secretaris is opgezegd.
Art. 7
Het Bestuur van het Genootschap bestaat uit zoo mogelijk minstens 7 van de oprichters van het Genootschap, de voorzitters en secretarissen der in art. 18 bedoelde eventueele afdeelingen en degenen die door het Bestuur tot medebestuurders worden gekozen.
Het benoemt uit zijn midden een Voorzitter, een Vice-voorzitter, een Secretaris en een Penningmeester, waarvan de drie laatsten het Dagelijksch Bestuur vormen. Het Dagelijksch Bestuur kan zich ten hoogste 2 leden assumeeren uit de leden van het Genootschap.
Het Bestuur regelt zijn werkzaamheden bij Huishoudelijk Reglement, dat geene bepalingen mag bevatten, die met deze statuten in strijd zijn.
Art. 8
Jaarlijks treden S der Bestuursleden af, volgens rooster, door het Bestuur op te maken.
Art. 9
De aftredende Bestuursleden zijn dadelijk herkiesbaar.
Art. 10
Het Dagelijksch Bestuur vertegenwoordigt het Genootschap in en buiten rechten en heeft het beheer over de eigendommen en inkomsten van het Genootschap. De inkomsten worden, na aftrek van de noodzakelijke uitgaven besteed voor het doel van het Genootschap.
Art. 11
Jaarlijks, uiterlijk in de maand Maart, wordt een Algemeene Vergadering gehouden, waarin de Secretaris verslag uitbrengt omtrent den toestand en de werkzaamheden van het Genootschap in het afgeloopen jaar. De Penningmeester legt rekening en verantwoording af. Bekrachtiging daarvan door de vergadering dechargeert tevens het Bestuur voor het gehouden financieele beheer. De Algemeene Vergadering benoemt nieuwe bestuursleden na aanbeveling door het Bestuur van dubbeltallen of herbenoemt aftredende Bestuursleden.
Art. 12
Het Genootschap vergadert zoo dikwijls als het Dagelijksch Bestuur zulks noodig oordeelt.
Art. 13
Het Bestuur kan Buitengewone Algemeene Vergaderingen bijeenroepen. Dergelijke vergaderingen zullen moeten worden gehouden wanneer 25 leden schriftelijk aan den Voorzitter hun wensen daartoe kenbaar hebben gemaakt. De Voorzitter roept, binnen 7 dagen na ontvangst van het schriftelijk verzoek, de vergadering bijeen.

Tusschen de oproeping tot elke Algemeene Vergadering, gewoon of buitengewoon, en het houden dier Vergadering, moeten minstens 7 vrije dagen verloopen.
Indien op schriftelijk verzoek van minstens 25 leden, bedoeld in het 2de lid van dit artikel, het Dagelijksch Bestuur niet binnen een maand een vergadering heeft uitgeschreven, hebben deze leden het recht, zeiven een vergadering uit te schrijven en bij afwezigheid van het Dagelijksch Bestuur het Bureau dier vergadering te kiezen. In alle andere gevallen zijn de Voorzitter en de Secretaris van het Genootschap, Voorzitter en Secretaris dier vergadering, tenzij het Bestuur een ander zijner leden hiermede belast
Art. 14
De vergaderingen worden bijeengeroepen door middel van convocatiebiljetten, minstens 3 weken van te voren, tenzij het Bestuur een spoedeischende verga dering binnen korteren termijn wenscht bijeen te roepen. De afdeelingen als zoodanig en de afzonderlijke leden hebben het recht schriftelijk voorstellen ter behandeling in te dienen mits uiterlijk 14 dagen vóór de vergadering. Het Bestuur stelt de agenda vast Voorstellen welke niet op de agenda geplaatst zijn, kunnen slechts worden behandeld met toestemming van minstens */4 der ter vergadering aanwezige leden.
Art. 15
Op de ledenvergaderingen brengt elk stemhebbend lid een stem uit Over zaken wordt mondeling, over personen schriftelijk gestemd. Staken de stemmen, dan volgt een nieuwe vrije stemming. Staken de stemmen opnieuw, dan wordt een voorstel beschouwd als te zijn verworpen, terwijl wat betreft personen, een derde vrije stemming plaats heeft, waarbij degenen als gekozen worden beschouwd die de meeste stemmen hebben gekregen, ook als zij niet de volstrekte meerderheid der uitgebrachte geldige stemmen op zich vereenigen, alles met inachtneming van art 5, 3de lid.
Art. 16
Wijzigingen dezer Statuten, evenals een besluit tot verlenging of verkorting van den duur van het Genootschap, kunnen alleen worden aangenomen, wanneer een Algemeene Ledenvergadering, hiervoor afzonderlijk belegd, met meerderheid van stemmen, vormende deze tevens minstens V» van het geheele aantal leden, hiertoe besluit. Is deze meerderheid niet Vs van het geheele aantal leden, dan kan het voorstel worden behandeld op een nieuwe vergadering, minstens 23 en uiterlijk 35 dagen na de eerste te houden en dan aangenomen worden met minstens a/8 der op die vergadering uitgebrachte geldige stemmen. Wijzigingen in deze Statuten treden niet in werking, alvorens daarop de Koninklijke goedkeuring is verkregen.
Art. 17
Het Bestuur regelt de wijze waarop het Genootschap zal trachten zijn doel te bereiken, met inachtneming der bepalingen dezer Statuten en der besluiten der Algemeene Vergadering.

Art 18
De leden die in een zelfde gemeente of in een zelfde gewest wonen, kunnen plaatselijke afdeelingen vormen. Deze plaatselijke afdeelingen zijn gehouden hun Reglement aan voorafgaande goedkeuring van het Bestuur te onderwerpen, eveneens elke wijziging hierin, en al hun plannen tot bereiking van het doel van het Genootschap.
Het Bestuur regelt de verhouding tusschen het Genootschap en de afdeelingen, ook wat betreft de geldmiddelen. Giften, verstrekt aan een afdeeling, blijven uitsluitend voor deze bestemd.
Art 19
In alle gevallen welke niet bij deze Statuten, noch bij bestuit der ledenvergadering zijn geregeld, voorziet het Bestuur, met inachtneming der Statuten en besluiten.
Art. 20
Het besluit tot opheffing van het Genootschap kan alleen in een Buitengewone Algemeene Vergadering worden genomen. Over de bezittingen van het Genootschap beschikt die Vergadering bij gewone meerderheid van stemmen. Alles behoudens inachtneming der voorschriften van het art. 1702 B. W.

REGLEMENT DER AFD. AMSTERDAM
Art. 1
De leden van het Genootschap Nederland-Engeland, welke te Amsterdam en omstreken woonachtig zijn, vormen tezamen de Afdeeling Amsterdam en omstreken van het Genootschap Nederland-Engeland.
Onder „omstreken" van Amsterdam zijn zoolang in deze plaatsen geen afdeelingen van het Genootschap zijn gesticht, o.a; begrepen Haarlem, Hilversum, Baarn, Zaandam, enz.
Art 2
De Afdeeling is opgericht 3 November 1920 voor den duur van het bestaan van het Genootschap Nederland-Engeland.
Art. 3
Aan het hoofd der Afdeeling staat een Algemeen Bestuur en een Uitvoerend Bestuur.
Het Uitvoerend Bestuur bestaat uit minstens vijf leden en wordt uit en door de vergadering gekozen.. Het benoemt uit zijn midden een Voorzitter, een Secretaris en een Penningmeester. Deze beide laatste functies kunnen door een persoon worden bekleed.
Het Algemeen Bestuur, dat door het Uitvoerend Bestuur benoemd wordt, verleent hieraan in bijzondere gevallen zijn raad en bijstand.
Art 4
jaarlijks treden twee leden van het Uitvoerend Bestuur af, volgens rooster door het Bestuur op te maken. De aftredenden zijn dadelijk herkiesbaar.
Art. 5
De bepalingen der Statuten van het Genootschap Nederland-Engeland zijn van toepassing op het beheer der Afdeeling, voorzoover door dit Reglement niet in anderen zin wordt voorzien.
