We will consider:

I. The right of petition „let this cup pass from me."

We infer it to be a right.

1. Because it is a necessity of our human nature, „let this cup pass". This necessity is twofold:

a. the necessity of sympathy;

ft. the necessity of escaping the sense of a crushing Fate.

2. We base this right on our privilege as children: „my father".

3. Christ used it as a right, therefore we may (and must:

the wish feit and not uttered, before God, is a prayer.)

II. Erroneous notions of what prayer is.

„As I will." The text said: „Not as I will":

1. this universe is a system of laws;

2. try is by fact;

3. the prejudicial results of such a belief;

4. it wou ld be most dangerous as a criterion of our spiritual state.

III. The true efficacy of prayer: „as Thou wilt."

1. Hence we conclude:

a. that prayer which does not succeed in changing the passi-

onate desire into still submission, is no true prayer; ft. that life is most holy in which there is least of petition and desire, and most of waiting upon God.

2. Contrast the moral consequences of this view of prayer

with those which arise from the other view. c.
