Swift-fleeting joy and transient ill
To man are ever near,
That pendulum vibrating still
Betwixt a smile and tear.
Nought else on Earth can joy impart,
Or bliss supreme afFord;
T’is promised to the pure in heart,
»Por they shall see the Lord.”
Then let not joy nor grief, my dear!
Thy free-born soul enslave;
But think of God as alivays near
And look beyond the grave.
